Epidemiological Activities
Dr. Smith studied epidemiology in an advanced program at the University of North Carolina as a part of his infectious disease training. He subsequently developed the first infectious disease control and epidemiology program at UMMC in the early 1970s. He has subsequently developed and guided programs at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Presbyterian hospital in Oklahoma City and Research hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.as part of the development of his large infectious disease practice in Kansas City he helped to develop epidemiology contracts with 9 hospitals in the Kansas City area representing over 1000 hospital beds. He has been a pioneer in developing these types of services in Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma as well as convincing hospital administration to provide compensation for these services. Since returning to Mississippi in 2002 he served on the infection control committee at UMC until joining full time private practice in 2006. He has also chaired the infection control committee at Cross Gates River Oaks and currently serves as the chairman of the infection control committee and hospital epidemiologist at River Oaks and Woman’s Hospital in Flowood , Mississippi.
Dr. Smith can design infection control programs for physician offices, clinics, surgi-centers, adult or pediatric day care, prisons, schools, sports teams, or hospitals. These services can be on a one time basis, as needed or an a continuing basis.
